Meet Pie

Part-Time Brain Cell Owner • Door Policy Enforcer • Pumpkin’s Strategic Advisor

Pie came home during what was supposed to be the official search for Juliet.

This entire situation began because one of my daughter’s friends came over, met Romeo, and immediately asked:

“Well, where’s Juliet?”

Now technically, Juliet was supposed to be a female kitten.

At this point, my husband had fully embraced participation in the household cat problem and was actively helping locate kitten adoption events online while pretending none of this was his fault because I was the one driving.

After several failed stops, we eventually found a rescue with a group of kittens that included both a beautiful female kitten and two orange boys.

The female kitten did not get along with the orange kittens at all, which meant there would still be no Juliet.

Instead, we somehow came home with Pumpkin and Pie.

Pie is the quieter and more reserved of the orange brothers. While Pumpkin approaches life like an unsupervised toddler with unlimited confidence and no survival instincts, Pie tends to sit back and evaluate situations before deciding whether participation is worth the effort.

Pie bonded especially strongly with my youngest daughter and still spends most of his time in or near her room. While she may not officially admit to having a favorite cat, Pie has absolutely decided that she belongs to him.

Pie and Pumpkin are also deeply emotionally codependent.

If they accidentally lose track of each other somewhere in the house, one of them will often begin crying dramatically as though they have been separated for years instead of approximately forty-five seconds.

Usually the other one immediately starts crying back.

This continues until visual confirmation of brother existence has been restored.

Pie also has extremely strong feelings about doors.

Specifically:
Doors should never be closed.

Ever.

A closed door is, in Pie’s opinion, both emotionally offensive and potentially a war crime. If a human attempts to close a door between themselves and Pie, he will sit outside screaming in outrage until the problem is corrected.

Sometimes he escalates by shoving paws underneath the door like a tiny orange horror movie creature.

Despite the dramatic behavior, Pie is actually a very sweet and loyal cat. He enjoys soft blankets, quiet naps, observing household activity from safe locations, and maintaining close surveillance of both his favorite human and his emotional-support brother.

Like most orange cats, Pie appears to share access to a single communal brain cell.

Fortunately, he occasionally gets visitation rights.
