Meet Comet

Professional Pillow Thief •Certified Mommy’s Boy •Tiny Squeak Machine

Comet came home during the second catastrophic shelter trip — the one caused by me realizing that taking only one daughter to pick kittens had been a terrible parenting decision.

My oldest daughter had already gone first and come home with Cleopatra and Figaro. Naturally, this left my youngest daughter deeply offended that she had not gotten to choose kittens too.

So back to the shelter we went.

At this point, I should have known better.

When my youngest daughter and I arrived carrying our own kitten carrier, the shelter employees immediately started laughing. We set the carrier down in the kitten room and within minutes there were approximately seven kittens climbing into it like we had opened a tiny furry Uber service.

The shelter employees kindly informed me they would offer a multi-cat discount if I wanted to take all of them home.

Thankfully, some fragment of common sense survived.

We only brought home two.

One of those kittens was Comet.

Comet is a soft gray-and-white little sweetheart whose entire life goal is to be as close to his people as physically possible. Every night he sleeps either directly on my pillow or curled into a tiny nest beside the bed like a fuzzy emotional support marshmallow.

When he was a kitten, his meow barely sounded like a cat at all. It sounded more like a tiny mouse squeak, which quickly earned him the nickname Mouse.

He still occasionally sounds like somebody stepped on a squeaky toy.

Comet also came home with a chronic eye infection that has never fully resolved despite many vet visits over the years. It’s essentially a feline herpes virus issue that causes his third eyelid to show sometimes and occasionally makes the eye look cloudy.

Thankfully, it does not seem to bother him very much.

He can still see from the eye, and because he absolutely hates having medication put into it, we mostly monitor it carefully unless it visibly starts causing discomfort.

This has, however, resulted in certain family members referring to him as One-Eye because remembering his actual name is difficult with ten cats in the house.

Comet remains one of the sweetest cats in the house.

He is gentle, affectionate and deeply attached to his mommy.

If you are sleeping in this house, Comet assumes that at some point during the night, your pillow belongs to both of you.
